State Drug Laws: A Patchwork of Penalties
State penalties for selling or possessing certain illicit drugs present a patchwork of options, with some states recommending life imprisonment for the same amount of an illegal substance that would warrant a maximum of one-year imprisonment in others. This special online report includes interviews with authors of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-supported study Illicit Drug Policies: Selected Laws from the 50 States. This report is the first comprehensive reference guide to illicit drug laws in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. It lists each state's scheduling and penalty provisions for selected drugs, as well as medical marijuana. It also identifies disparities in federal and state controlled substance scheduling.
